Roman Bronze Statuette of Jupiter

Object Description

A fine Ancient Roman bronze statuette of the god Jupiter holding a thunderbolt. Modelled in the round, the god is depicted nude, standing in a contrapposto stance, leaning on his straight right leg, while his left is bent and relaxed, placed in front. In his outstretched right hand, he holds a thunderbolt, a typical attribute of the god, while his left hand is raised and curled, perhaps once holding a sceptre or other attribute. He has been rendered naturalistically, with the details of his musculature and other anatomy still visible. The god shows a serene expression, with close-set, circular eyes, a straight nose, and slightly curved lips. A thick beard, moustache, and full head of hair further enriches the god’s head.

The statuette is mounted on a custom-made stand. The measurements listed below include the stand. Without the stand, the figure weighs 137.6g and measures 9.1cm in height and 5.7cm in length.

Object Condition

Very fine condition. Earthly encrustations and a dark patina to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as minor surface pitting, chipping, and scratches. A long scrape to the top of the thunderbolt. The statuette’s right foot has been chipped and is now missing.
