Object Description
A beautiful Ancient Roman Cupid statuette cast from bronze featuring the standing figure of a nude male youth with small out-splayed wings. The figure is depicted in a dynamic contrapposto, striding or floating forward with his right arm extended and his left arm trailing behind. It is evident that the the right hand originally held some attribute, possibly a cornucopia or rhyton. The facial and anatomical features have been rendered naturalistically displaying his youthful face framed by deeply incised, curls surmounted by an elaborate topknot. A thick sash is wound around Cupid’s waist, looped and tucked at either side, the ends flowing out and billowing with the figure’s movement. The statuette is mounted on a custom-made stand.
Height of the statuette without the stand: 14.2cm
Date: Circa 1st-3rd Century AD
