Roman North African Terracotta Oil Lamp with Nebuchadnezzar

Object Description

An Ancient Roman terracotta oil lamp featuring an elongated oval body and a circular discus. The lamp’s discus displays an Old Testament scene. It portrays the three Hebrews before Nebuchadnezzar, seated, and his idol with an additional person present (Daniel 3: 13–18). There are two filling holes above and below the scene. A raised ridge encircles the discus and extends towards the nozzle hole, forming a broad channel on the rounded spout. The shoulders are decorated with triangular leaf motifs, some now worn. There is a spike-like lug handle, flattened on each side. The lamp stands on a raised ring base.

Object History

Private collection, Belgium acquired in Sbeitla, Tunisia in 1973: recorded in a March 1985 insurance document.

Object Condition

Fine condition, repairs around the nozzle and sides. Stable crack surrounding part of the scene and a chip to the nozzle. Some wear and encrustation to the surface consistent with age. Collection reference written on the base by the previous owner.
