Object Description
An Ancient Roman, Sidonian amphoriskos mould blown from pale blue glass. The vessel’s ovoid body raises from a flat circular foot, then tapers into a short cylindrical neck with an everted rim. Two handles have been applied from the shoulder to the neck. A delicate decoration enriches the body, comprised of a central frieze with a curling motif, framed by two horizontal ridges at either side. Short radiating ridges form a specular pattern above and below the central decorative register. The amphoriskos has been blown in a two-part mould: traces of the joining seam can be seen at the mid-way point vertically. Beautiful iridescence covers the majority of the piece’s surface.
