Object Description

A very fine and rare Roman silver crossbow brooch featuring a semi-circle arched bow and short, rectangular foot. The cross-bar is adorned with three small knobs, one at either end and a final knob brought forward from the cross-bar and applied to the bow. Below each knob is a ring with vertical incisions covering the surface. Two long incisions outline the bow and further markings are visible on the foot. The hinged pin, still complete, sits in the pin catch and displays some movement. The foot exhibits a small mechanism for holding the pin in place. A small protrusion by the pin can be slid back and forth revealing the tip of the pin allowing for minor movement.

Date: Circa 3rd-4th century AD
