Object Description

A very fine Roman silver cup with fluted decoration from the Gandharan region. The cup features an ovoid bowl at the bottom, separated from a plain upper portion with a raised, encircling ridge. The lower bowl sits on a slightly flattened circular base and is decorated with horizontal fluting. The straight walls of the plain upper portion rise up to a circular mouth, with a slightly flared lip and flat rim.

Date: Circa 1st Century BC – 1st Century AD

Object History

Acquired from a private UK collection prior to 1979. Ex Julian Sherrier collection, a leading figure in Gandharan art. With Christie’s, New York, sale 2337, 14th September 2010, no.56A (part).

Object Condition

Fine condition. Encrustations and slight tarnishing to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as discolouration, indentations, warping, cracks, and perforations. A larger crack and perforation to one side. Smaller cracks to the rim and top of the fluted section. Repaired to a crack near the base.
