Object Description

A fine, Romano-Celtic bronze barbarous coin, imitating a bronze folles, struck under Constantine I the Great, commemorating the foundation of Constantinopolis or New Rome. The obverse features the helmeted bust of Roma, wearing the imperial mantle, facing left. The accompany legend reads VRBS ROMA, which can be translated as the City of Rome. The reverse displays Victory, with her wings spread, standing with her head facing the left. She is draped and her feet are wide apart, with her right foot firmly planted on a the prow of a ship before in the left field. In her right hand, she holds a transverse sceptre while her left rests on a shield set on the ground behind. Below, in the exergue, the mintmark TR·P appears, imitating the mintmark of the Trier mint.

Date: Circa 4th Century AD

Object Condition

Very fine condition, with the legend and mintmark still visible, though slightly worn. Dark patina and signs of wear as consistent with age, such as scratches, to the surface.
