Object Description

An imposing 17-inch dial rustic French dial clock dating from the middle of the 19th century, with a gold-painted metal surround.

The movement case is a hexagonal wooden structure, edged in shaped wooden sections, left as an unpolished backbox.

The French movement has an 8-day duration. It has outside countwheel strike on a bell, striking the hours and the passing of the half hour.

There is a regulation arbor which protrudes through the dial, just above the signature, Hirt, Nantes.

Object History

Charles Hirt of Nantes (c.1820-c.1890) is noted in Tardy’s dictionary of clockmakers as having exhibited turret clocks between 1851 and 1861.

Object Condition

The movement is overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
