Object Description

A Charming Late 19th Century Satinwood Bowfronted Miniature Chest, In The Sheraton Style, Having Elegant Hand Painted Polychrome Decoration To Top And Four Long Drawers, Retaining Original Brass Handles, Raised On Elegant Original Splay Bracket Feet With Shaped Apron.

Often it is debated whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts.

This little miniature chest was almost certainly made as a sample piece. The overall quality of the construction, the materials used and the general feel of the piece all suggest that it was certainly an item being used to showcase how beautiful the items available could be.

A really quite charming piece of antique miniature furniture which is in good condition and ready to be placed into the home immediately, we think that aside from just looking beautiful and elegant it would make a fabulous little jewellery storage box, or somewhere to store cuff links and such like in the bedroom.

Its really worth bearing in mind just how much time, and skill, would have gone into creating all of the various features which make this such a beautiful little item.
