Object Description
Set of 11 19th century Bois Durci portrait roundels
French, 19th Century
Largest: Height 1.5cm, diameter 15.5cm
Smallest: Height 1cm, diameter 11.5cm
This set of 11 panels depicts famous historical figures. Portraits include Queen Victoria, Empress Eugenie, and Beethoven, amongst others. Each of the roundels depicts its subject in side-profile, typical of the Victorian style, and their names are embossed around the outside of the portrait. The roundel of Beethoven is surrounded by a laurel frame.
Some panels are signed on the reverse ‘Bois Durci’ in various fonts. The inscription leads them to be attributed to François Lepage, the inventor of the Bois Durci material. This unusual man-made substance is notable for its hard, glossy finish and durability, making it a perfect material for decorative items such as plaques and ink stands. It is often compared to Whitby Jet.
These charming portraits give an insight into the popular figures of 19th century Europe, and are a wonderful collector’s item.
