At the end of the 19th century, Maw & Co. was one of the largest tile factories in the world, trading for a further 70 years before closing in 1970.

Encaustic tiles

Encaustic tiles are traditionally created using different colours of ceramic clay with a pattern inlaid into the body of the tile. The coloured clays can expand into the base tile colour, meaning the patterns remain visible even after centuries of wear.
