Object Description
Set of 24 silver underplates
Continental, 20th Century
Height 1.5cm, diameter 30cm
This very refined set of twenty-four underplates (also called charger plates) was crafted in the 20th century. Entirely made from silver, this set would make a very elegant addition to one’s table setting.
Each underplate is of a pared-down design, the piece acting as a ‘canvas’ for what is to be placed on top of it. The edges are wonderfully beaded, adding a subtle design feature. Plates holding all courses are to be placed on them, their large size ensuring all dishes will be elegantly displayed.
Charger plates were first introduced in the medieval times. Their function is to prevent food staining the tablecloth, to retain the heat of the food placed on top of them as well as to protect the table from heat damage.
The underplates are marked ‘N900’ and together weigh approximately 12,708 grammes.
Their elegant design would make a superb addition to one’s formal dinner setting.
