Object Description

Very fine set of 8 oak antique dining chairs all with arms. These imposing chairs are large, comfortable and extremely well made. This balanced and pleasing form is a good example of a new age in furniture design showing a concerted effort to depart from the old styles of the previous decades of the nineteenth century. Attributed to Bruce James Talbert, architect and designer (1838-1881), English c.1870

Object History

Although trained initially as a carver and later as an architect Bruce Talbert became best known as a decorator and furniture designer. He ran a prolific design studio employing numerous pupils and buying in work from freelance designers. His textile designs were produced by Warner’s, Templeton’s, Cowlishaw, Nichol & Co. and Barbour & Miller and carpets by Templeton’s and Brinton & Co. His two publications, Gothic Forms 1867 and the posthumously published Fashionable Furniture, 1881, ably reflect changing fashions of the late 19th century. [Arts & Crafts Textiles in Britain.]
