Object Description
An Extremely Attractive Harlequin Set Of Eight, Mid 19th Century, Ash Kitchen Windsor Dining Chairs, In The Manner Of Philip Clissett, With Elegant Spindle Turned Decoration To Backs, Over Attractive Rushed Seats, Raised On Elegant Turned Legs With Single Stretchers To Front.
A very attractive set of country style dining chairs which are in excellent condition. All the joints are strong and the there are no structural defects to speak of at all, so they are very much fit for original purpose and more. The rush seats have even been very recently rerushed which is another added bonus.
The design is a style which is known to have been produced by well known West Midlands chair maker Philip Clissett. He operated throughout the majority of the 19th century and quite unusually was known for constructing the entire chairs himself, as opposed to sub contracting different design elements to other cabinet makers. Clissett always used the traditional method of a pole lathe and shave horse, the result of which is many well known and distinctive designs from his career.
As is almost always the case with english, country made, dining chairs there are some differences to turnings and detailed parts of these chairs, as well as some of the measurements. It should also be noted that the two carver armchairs are slightly different from each other in terms of design and they are also a bit lower in the seat than the chairs without arms, perfect for the taller people.
Perfect around a wide variety of dining tables these are a great design of chair. They are relatively robust, whilst also being elegant and small enough to tuck nicely around a table at the same time. This is often a difficult combination to find with english country chairs.
As with all items we offer for sale the chairs have been inspected and any minor issues attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale. They have also received a natural wax polish ensuring they are in tip top condition and ready to place straight into the home after purchase.
