Object Description
An ornate pair of antique wrought iron side gates, dating from the 1890s. These gates are beautifully detailed with a series of scrolled quatrefoils that together make a smart, uniform look. At over 120 years old, these gates are in good condition, applied with recent paint and fitted with a new latch and hinges, making them ready to hang in situ in a garden or yard.
These gates are a practical size, designed for an opening of approximately 172 cm (67.72).
Wrought Iron Gates
Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.
