Object Description

Set of five allegorical porcelain sculptures by Meissen
German, c. 1975
Height 15cm, width 10cm, depth 8.5cm

The five figures in this set are allegorical of the senses: the woman portrayed in each piece enacts one of the five senses: one lady feels the bite of a bird; another plays a musical instrument; the third eats fruit, while the fourth smells flowers; the fifth lady glances at herself, enacting the sense of sight. The figures are dressed and adorned in the Rococo style. Each lady is set atop a parcel gilt porcelain base. The underside of each base features underglaze blue marks for Meissen and an incised model number (from 70660 to 70664), impressed numerals and date codes, and various painters’ numbers.
