Object Description
Set of four coloured etchings from Description de l’Égypte
French, 1809-1822
Mount: Height 41cm, width 56cm, depth 0.5cm
Sheet: Height 32cm, width 49cm
The sheets in this set of four are from the early nineteenth-century publication Description de l’Égype, a volume of books that was produced in the years after Napoleon’s 1798 invasion of Egypt. Each sheet features a series of hand-coloured etchings of groups of elderly men and various animal studies. The works are after original sketches by the artist Dominique Vivant, Baron de Denon, who accompanied Napoleon’s army to help document the expedition.
Each sheet is numbered and inscribed ‘Denon del.’ and ‘B. Comte sc.’ The sheets are held within mounts.
