Object Description
A wonderful and rare collection of nine, oil on canvas paintings of the Sibyls, early 18th century, French school, Libyan, Cumean, Lampusian, Hellespontine, Erythraean, Delphic, Persian, Tiburttine and Egyptian Sibyls. Each bearing various inscriptions.
Definition of Sibyl – a woman in ancient times who was thought to utter the prophecies of a god.

The present works are related to a series of book plates in Pierre Mussard’s Historia deorum fatidicorum, which was published in 1680.
