Object Description

Group of 21 reclaimed glazed tiles by the makers Carter Tiles displaying ochre and buff stylised Tudor roses.

These 3-inch tiles could be used in several ways including a decorative panel or a vibrant splashback for a vintage kitchen.

Supplied loose, these tiles are antique and as such have a characterful, timeworn look with scuffs and crazing here and there that only enhances the beauty of their striking pattern.

This set also includes some extra tiles with minor flaws.

Carter Tiles

Carter Tiles was founded in 1873 by Jesse Carter, a builder’s merchant and ironmonger from Surrey, bought James Walker’s brick and tile business on the East Quay at Poole.

By the 1880’s Carters was competing with other manufacturers on a national level, then expanded in 1895.

In the early 20th century, the demand for decorative ceramics grew and Carter went on to supply beautiful tiles, much like these ones, to breweries, pubs, hospitals, schools, retailers, municipal authorities and many others all around the country.

Object Condition

Good structural condition. Traces of grout to the edges and reverse. Minor wear to glaze. The 16 tiles pictured are in very good condition. The additional 5 have minor flaws.
