Object Description
An elegant set of reclaimed wrought iron gates with accompanying cast iron posts to set the stage for a beautiful driveway in a country home or townhouse. Delicately made from wrought iron, each gate features a sweeping top with ornate scrolling ironwork above a lattice detailed frame with riveted construction. Although more than 100 years old, the gates and posts are in excellent condition with a working stay and latch as well as all original hinge components. They require minimal maintenance and are ready to be placed in situ at the entrance to a property, garden or driveway.
A stamp reading ‘Hill and Smith, Brierly Hill’ tells us that these gates and posts were made by Hill and Smith of Brierly Hill, established in 1824. The company still exists today under the name Hill and Smith Holdings making modern items such as road barriers and infrastructure, however their early works included items such as hurdles, fencing and gates like this one which has stood the test of time from the late 19th century.
