Object Description
This exquisite clock set is designed in an elegant 18th-Century Rococo manner, in the style of Sèvres porcelain wares. Rococo is characterised by its use of pastel colours, graceful natural forms and courtly elegance.
The mantel clock case is surmounted by a gilt bronze (ormolu) urn, which is capped by a ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain lid. Four gilt bronze pinecone finials cap the corners of the clock case. The gilt bronze case features fluted pilasters on its corners, which are draped with garlands. Mounted onto the side panels of the case are gilt bronze classical masks and floral motifs. The circular porcelain dial is painted in a ‘bleu celeste’ colour and features a floral wreath centre which is encircled by Roman Numerals. Beneath the dial is an inset porcelain plaque, which features a pair of amorous figures engaged in a courting dance. The clock case stands on four gilt bronze scrolled legs, on a shaped base which is decorated in a similar manner to the case. This base is set on gilt bronze turnip and foliate feet. The clock is accompanied by a pair of similarly ornamented candelabra.
