An Exceptionally Fine Quality George III, Sheraton Period, Late 18th Century Satinwood Side Cabinet Having Superbly Figured Rectangular Top Over Two Upholstered Brass Grille Panelled Doors, With Delightful Bands Of Polychrome Painted Decorated Scenes Throughout And Outstanding Turned Tapering Coloumns, Raised On Elegant Original Tapered Feet.
This extremely functional piece of late 18th century furniture is both exceptionally elegant and also wonderful quality. Clearly constructed in a top London workshop of the late 18th century for a well heeled client it boasts high grade, well figured satinwood veneers, quite wonderful hand painted decoration and superb quality of construction.
Typical in design for the late 18th century sheraton period it is very much refined with much more effort to create a decorative design finish that the plainer items which were being produced just a decade or two earlier in hepplewhite and chippendale times. The emphasis is very much on decoration & figuring of timbers rather than elaborate carving.
Overall the condition is very good and as one would expect for an item of this age. There is quite a lot of rubbing to all of the paint decorated areas, in fact the decoration has almost totally rubbed through in some areas, but this very much adds to the overall feel and originality of the item and certainly doesn’t take anything away from the piece at all. Indeed its good to see these relatively worn areas in terms of the fact that an item this old should have those worn areas of decoration if its in good original condition and not been later enhanced.
As with all items which we offer for sale this georgian side cabinet has been inspected by our specialist, trained and highly skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale to ensure it is in the very best possibly condition and ready for immediate placement within the home or office.
