Object Description
Silver and silver gilt nef sailing ship
Continental, 20th Century
Height 44cm, width 38cm, depth 12cm
Made from silver and silver gilt, this nef, also known as a model ship, is brilliantly formed to depict a galleon. Historically, pieces like this eye-catching model were used as dining table centrepieces, placed in front of the most important person to showcase their wealth and status.
The ship’s body is masterfully cast in high relief with scrolling motifs and figures of putti riding a sea creature. The head of a Rococo-style dolphin adorns the rudder. Among the numerous masts, flags and shrouds are several figures bringing the marine-themed story to life. The combination of silver and silver gilt beautifully highlights various design features of the galleon.
The piece stands on four wheels and is marked ‘925’ and ‘STERLING’ in several places. A ‘IFR & Ltd’ mark next to the date code for 1994 stands for Israel Freeman & Son Ltd who was an importer of silver.
Of an extremely intricate design, the piece celebrates the long history of nefs and would be a magnificent decorative piece for anyone interested in nautical history.
The piece weighs approximately 1,520 grams.
