Object Description
Silver Jewish multi-tiered Passover Seder tray
Continental, Early 20th Century
Height 28cm, diameter 37cm
Made for the Jewish religious festival of Passover, this superb Seder tray is an early twentieth century continental piece with multiple tiers and wonderful silver sculpture on top. While there are certain rules for the arrangement and items of food for these pieces, there are little to no restrictions pertaining to Seder plates or trays’ actual design, hence the vast range in appearance of these pieces, and the extraordinary level of creativity in their production. Here, the places for the symbolic foods are in the form of delightful and excellently-sculpted figures holding baskets and bowls, while small silver birds adorn the rim of the upper layer. Despite its unclear origins, the quality of this piece is undeniable.
