Object Description

A very elegant silver-plated French oval four-glass mantel clock, dating from the 1880s.

The oval case has been newly silver-plated in a bright soft satin finish. The curved beveled edge glasses are all in excellent condition with no chips or scratches.

The 4 inch white enamel dial has an outer ring with Roman numerals, and a recessed centre with a visible dead-beat Brocot escapement with jewelled pallets.

The eight-day circular movement is stamped on the backplate with the trademark of Richard et Cie, and numbered 875. It strikes the hours and the passing of the half hour on a bell.

It has a twin vial mercury temperature compensated pendulum, with a polished brass top and base.

Richard et Cie had premises in London and Paris from the 1860s. They exhibited carriage clocks at the Paris Exposition of 1889, receiving an Honourable Mention. In their advert in Kelly’s Directory of the Click and Watch Trades, 1887, they say “All Own Made Goods are of Guaranteed Quality and bear our Trade Mark” .

Object Condition

The movement is to be overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
