Object Description

Six gouache on paper miniature Ragamala paintings, each with a legend in devanagri script on a yellow ground panel. Each painting representing the mood of a different Raga. Rajasthan, probably Bundi, early 19th century.

Object History

Ragas are classical Indian musical compositions usually written for the Sitar or the Vina and evoke a time of the year or a time of the day. These Ragamalas probably represent, Kedar, Sri, Vasant, Bhairavi, Gujari and Vibasa.

Framed and glazed in modern matt black simple frames with an ivory card mount.

Framed and glazed. Losses to the edges of the paintings
