Object Description

An 18th century fall-front secretaire or secretaire de Dame of petite proportions and of bombe shape with a shaped rouge marble top above a frieze drawer. The bombe front and doors divided into cartouche panels, each panel quatre-foil veneered highlighting the beautiful grain of the kingwood. Attention is drawn to the top corner ornaments of the marquetry panels that are notably outlined in the shape of a stylized leave. The shaped sides of the secretaire have conforming marquetry panels and the secretaire is raised on tapering legs in gilt-bronze foliate sabots.

Object History

Shape and design of this small desk, in particular the accentuation of the panel marquetry, appear to be in the tradition of works by Jean- Mathieu Chevallier (1694-1768, maitre 1743), Antoine Mathieu Criard (circa 1724-1787, maitre 1747) und F.C. Franc (1722-1799, maitre 1756).
