Object Description

An Attractive And Good Quality Mid 19th Century Rosewood Reading, Or Writing, Table Of Relativelt Compact Proportions, Having Attractive Inset Leather To Sectioned Top With Ratcheted Centre And Hinged Ends, Over Central Frieze Drawer Retaining Original Turned Wooden Knobs And False Drawers To Reverse, Raised On Tablet Type End Supports With Turned Feet And Concealed Castors.

This particularly attractive little table packs a lot of punch into a relatively small package. Firstly it’s not 100% clear what its original purpose was in terms of whether it was made as a reading table, or writing table, both of which were very popular items in the 19th century. Either way it suits the purpose of both and could even be used as a music stand should somebody so wish. It is also worth remembering that the book rest is detachable and that when removed, along with the centre section of the top being dropped flush, the item actually becomes a really rather sweet occasional lamp table, or even a bedside table.

It is constucted from a nicely figured cut of rosewood and the secondary timbers are also all of good quality, along with the way it is constructed. All of this very much adds to the overall appeal of the piece. The condition is good and the leather has been relatively recently replaced, but is not brand new which in our opinion gives a nice clean, but not overly new effect. It also retains its original turned wooden knobs which is a nice feature.

As with all items we offer for sale this table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly trained and skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers and has received a natural wax polish meaning that it is ready to be placed immediately into the home.
