Object Description

A small, Anglo-Saxon cruciform, long brooch cast from bronze. The fibula features an arched bow that leads to a central rectangular head-plate. The wings slightly eroded with time. There is a ridged knob to the top of the plate. The arched bow tapers slightly towards the end and concludes with an animal-headed terminal. The head featuring bulbous eyes and flaring snout. The reverse features the original catch plate and remains of the iron pin. Iron oxidisation is still visible where the pin once was.

Date: Circa 5th-6th century AD

Ex Wiltshire collection of brooches and militaria, acquired 1980s-2000s.

Object Condition

Fine condition, pin now missing with iron deposits where the hinge is. Different hues of patination cover the surface. Edges of the cruciform wings are chipped.
