Object History

History of M. C. Hider:
“M.C. Hider” is the signature of Mabel C. Hider (1888–1959), a British painter and daughter of prolific landscape artist Frank Hider (1861–1933). Her work, often featuring similar coastal and Highland scenes, is frequently miss-attributed to her father, though census records confirm she worked independently.

Frank Hider was born in Lambeth, South London in 1861. He married Laura Ann Hill in 1885 and by 1901 they were living at 10 Westbury Road, Selhurst, Croydon. By 1911, they had moved to 99 Boleyn Road, Forest Gate, Essex. Altogether they had 8 children, 6 of whom survived infancy, 3 daughters Mable C, Violet and Evelyn and 2 sons, Frank Jr. and Christopher George.

Frank Jr. (1894-1916) died during WW1 as a Private in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Wiltshire Regiment during the campaign in Mesopotamia. Christopher George (1885-1991) was an art student in 1911 and, as there are paintings similar to those of Frank on the market, but signed G. Hider.

M.C. Hider is attributed to Mabel C. Hider, born in 1888. She was one of eight children of British landscape painter Frank Hider. Like her father, she painted atmospheric, traditional landscapes, often Highland lochs and coastal views. Many paintings signed “M.C. Hider” or “G. Hider” (likely brother Christopher) were historically grouped under Frank Hider’s name, but census records show Mabel worked on her own account. Both Mabel and her brother Christopher also became painters.
