Object Description

This small ebonised mantel clock dates from the 1860s, and is highly decorative, the case front having contrasting foliate inlaid marquetry.

The clock has an 8-day French movement with outside countwheel strike on a bell. It strikes the hours and the passing of the half hour. The movement is signed Thomas a Paris, for whom Vincenti made it, and is stamped with Vincenti’s Medaille d’Argent, the emblem for the silver medal that was awarded in 1855. All production ceased in 1870, so this clock dates within that 15-year period.

The 3-inch white enamel dial is in perfect condition, and is signed THOMAS A PARIS.

Rather than a hinged front door, the glass that protects the dial is fitted with a shaped wooden top, lifted through the serpentine top of the case with a small ivorine knob. The back door is latched and lifts out completely.

Matching trefoil steel hands.
