Object Description

A Very Attractive Late 18th Century, George III Period Oak Dresser Base, Of Unusually Small Proportions, Having Rectangular Top Over Three Frieze Drawers, With Replacement Brass Pierced Plate Handles, Raised On Square Upright Supports With Original Potboard Shelf Below.

As suggested by the name the original purpose of a potboard shelf was to store all manner of pots and pans. These pots and pans were often still wet, very heavy, or possibly still hot when placed back onto the storage shelf and this is the reason that we regularly find potboard shelves replaced on antique dresser bases. The potboard shelf on this example is however original.

Overall the dresser base is an extremely sweet size, perfect for a wide ranging variety of spaces around the home, due to its narrow proportions amongst other things. It is also very elegant and retains an excellent warm colour and patina, which is a consequence of years and years of hard graft and use, combined with love and care.

There is very little damage to speak of, certainly nothing visually unappealing, or which causes a structural problem and although the brass handles are replacements they look more than acceptable and actually sit very nicely on the piece indeed. They have clearly been in situ for a very long time and are exactly the right style of handle for the original period of the dresser.

As with all items which we offer for sale this dresser base has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, where it has recieved a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home environment.
