Object Description

English Dial Clock by J.Allen, Norwich

Mahogany round dial wall clock with brass bezel, inspection door to the side and bottom door to allow access for the pendulum.

Nine and three quarter in painted dial with Roman numerals, original steel hands signed ‘J.Allen, Norwich’.

Eight day fusee movement with substantial brass rectangular plates, anchor escapement and original brass lenticular bob pendulum. C.1910

‘Norfolk and Norwich clocks and clockmakers’ by Clifford and Yvonne Bird lists James Bousfield Allen as working from London Street, Norwich c.1858-1933. In 1883 he formed a partnership with Charles Waterhousedaws and moved to No.9 St.Giles, Street. There is a Turret clock at St. Marlarets Church, Catton (just outside Norwich0 which bears the name ‘Allen and Daws, Norwich 1896. The clock is mentioned on page 23 ( Norfolk and Norwich clocks and clockmakers).
