Object Description

An Extremely Attractive, Maltese, Early 19th Century Olivewood And Walnut Circlar Occasional Lamp Table, Having Drum Type Revolving Circular Top With Segmented Veneers And Inlaid Central Star, Over Four Frieze Drawers Alongside Four False Drawers, Raised On Elegant Turned Central Stem And Tripod Legs.

Maltese made furniture became highly desirable and fashionable around the early 1990’s following the realease of a book by Joe Galea Naudi, titled ‘Antique Maltese Furniture’ which extolled the virtues and beauty of it. Since then it has remained incredibly popular, boosted of course by the fact that there is not a huge amount of maltese furniture found on the market.

Generally it can be identified through a variety of different features, including but not limited to, the use of fabulously attractive olive wood veneers and the inlay of a maltese cross, or sometimes a similar star in the top of a table. Very often the secondary materials and craftsmanship will also be of signifcantly inferior quality to what you would find on a similar piece made in one of the grander European cities of the time simply due to availability and the skill of the local cabinet makers.

We are almost certain that this pretty little table is maltese in origins and dates to the early 19th century. It is a fabulously useful little size and incredibly elegant, perhaps down to the simplicity of its design.

As with all items which we offer for sale it has been inspected by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers in their workshops before being offered for sale and also received a natural wax polish.
