Object Description

A pair of sexy hall chairs in Spanish mahogany, with very smart Grecian-inspired architectural backs

England, circa 1800.

Why we like them

Their smart design, superb quality and richly patinated, original colour make these chairs a rare and desirable find, a versatile and decorative object, suitable for sleek and opulent interiors.

The georgians were obsessed with the classical Greek culture and often used the motifs seen on the ‘Grand Tour’ or excavated objects in decoration and design.

Georgian hall chairs are rare survivors due to their delicate construction, originally intended only for decorative purpose and only occasonal use with care.

This particular pair has an unusual and rare, pure late Georgian design with flowing line and smart hand-carved neoclassical decoration, that is supposed to display the owner’s crest, painted in the central medallion.

Superb quality of construction, top quality Spanish mahogany, glorious patina, pleasingly mellowed colour.

A pair of hall chairs with identical backs bearing crest of the Dukes of Hamilton was sold Sotheby’s, London, the Royal and Noble sale, 17 January 2019, lot 179.
