Object Description

This particular early Feraghan carpet has a rare ivory field which complements the varied colour composition of the monochrome drawing. It is also distinguished by its wide terracotta border. The colour combination is entirely vegetable-dyed and these natural colours have nicely aged. A stylish example with a rare squarish shape has a quiet formality that can blend with a wide range of settings.

Object History

Early Feraghan carpets were popular during the 19th century as they were created in the same region as the equally popular and much sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets. Both are often seen in grand European houses because of their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours. Feraghan carpets stand out since they artfully balance both tribal and formal elements of rug design.

Object Condition

It has a thin pile and is in good practical condition for everyday use, retaining all its original borders on all four sides, a remarkable feature for a rug dating to the late 19th century.
