Object Description

Staffordshire Pottery figure with a theatrical and literary theme which features a child hanging over a waterfall, being carried by a Roc bird, perched on an oval base. Dull gilt base line. Decorated mainly to the front. Vent hole to the reverse. This piece represents or could have been inspired by the story, ‘The Arabian Nights’ first translated into English in 1840. Book reference ,’Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875′ Book 2, by A.& N. Harding, page 259, figure 2839/2840.

Object Condition

Good. Slight rubbing to gilt. KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage cracks to the ground; a few specks of kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the bird. RESTORATION. Retouched paint losses to bird and ground.
