Object Description

Staffordshire porcellaneous figure with a theatrical and literary theme which features John Milton leaning on a pillar, stood on a shaped base. Dull gilt base line and embellishment. Decorated ‘in the round’ – decoration to front and reverse. Open bottomed. Book reference,’Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875′ Book 1, by A.& N. Harding, page 203, figure 86.

Object Condition

Generally good. A few paint losses to pillar at reverse. Slight rubbing to gilt. KILN EFFECTS: flecks of stray coloured glaze to the base. RESTORATION. Remodelled end of quill in left hand. Filled chip to his left hand. Stabilised and retouched crack to right wrist. Retouched paint losses to his hair, pillar and shoes.
