Oil on panel painting by Early 20th Century Northern European School
A stunning formal portrait by a Northern European artist working in the 1920s or 30s. The epitome of haughty elegance, this grande dame is clearly completely at ease with her wealth and position in society. I enjoy the sense that she has wan dered into her drawing room to find her glasses and was caught unaware by a random painter she found there. From the richness of her evening gown and the carefully captured art collection she wouldn’t have survived any those revolu tions rumbling in her historical background. I have a suspi cion that this might be a rather informal portrait of Princess Ileana of Rumania, after her marriage to Archduke Anton of Austria in 1931. Just a suspicion though.
This painting has been shown at our exhibition ‘A Dealer´s Eye’ in March 2020. View e-catalogue here: https://ebooks.panterandhall.com/other/a-dealers-eye/
