Object Description

Striking Bessarabian Kilim, c. 1920s
2.76 x 1.96 m

The tradition of Bessarabian kilim weaving dates to the later period of Ottoman rule over the Eastern Balkans – broadly, the territory now covered by Bulgaria and Moldova – and is known for a unique combination of designs elements from Anatolian and Caucasian carpets, as well as from 19th Century European weavings.

This early 20th Century piece is a fine example, featuring a subtle charcoal field, overlaid with delicate floral motifs in tones of sage green and red ochre, flanked by a wide decorative border. The artist has lent a wonderful abrash – or colour variation – to the ground, which gives this wonderful flatweave a real sense of depth and character.

A unique and charming piece, in very good to excellent condition, to suit a wide variety of settings
