Object Description

Striking c. 1880 Heriz Carpet
5.76 x 3.40 m

Early Heriz carpets from north-west Persia are in a class of their own. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction, and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs. In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.

This striking Nineteenth Century example features a muted blue field, serving as a remarkable backdrop to the with bold, graphic tribal motifs repeated across the field, in a wide, vegetable-dyed palette, including hues of saffron, sky blue, sage green and warm terracotta red, which have taken on a fine patina with age. Being an earlier piece, it boasts an especially fine weave, lending a crisp clarity to its drawing, and a high degree of creative freedom – especially notable in its wide border, with the decorative pattern spontaneously repeated in various forms and colours.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, this near-150-year-old carpet preserves its outer borders and short fringes on all sides, with minimal age-related restoration.

A truly timeless piece, rare in this impressively large format, which would add a sense of tribal charm and character to any setting.
