Object History

The weaving of Oushak carpets in western Turkey began in the 14th century at the beginning of the Ottoman empire. Two centuries later during  the 16th century, the carpets became highly valued as objets d’art and were often featured in Renaissance paintings. During the 19th century the Oushak region became a major centre of weaving furnishing carpets, particularly for the Western market.  Early Oushak carpets are appreciated for their silky wool, large scale drawings and subdued colours which complement nicely European and Western furnishing tastes.
