Object Description

The creativity and charming naivety of this early Laver Kirman carpet is due to its creation before the industrialisation of workshop weavings in Kirman at the turn of the 20th century. The well-balanced, settled design is enhanced by the ivory field, which draws together the richly varied colour composition. The muted, vegetable-dyed colours have aged nicely and give this carpet a special warmth and depth. An elegant example with a quiet formality which effortlessly complements its setting.

Object History

The city of Kirman in north-east Persia has been the centre of fine rug weaving since the 17th century and enjoyed a renaissance in the 19th century when rug weaving became more widespread. Kirman established itself once again during this era as a centre of high-category weavings in the best Persian tradition. 19th century Kirman carpets, particularly those of the Laver group, are known for their technically superior weaves, delicate drawings and an incomparable range of colours. They are highly sought after and are often seen in grand historic houses in Europe and the UK.

Object Condition

This carpet is in well-preserved original condition for everyday use with minimal patination and still retains all itsĀ  borders on all sides – a remarkable feature for a rug of this age.
