Striking Swedish Design Flatweave Carpet

Flatweave carpets – known as röllakan – have been woven in Sweden since at least the 17th Century, but experienced a particular revival in the mid-20th Century, incorporating elements of both mid-century modern and folk design. These pieces are widely sought after by collectors and designers today, known for their elegant simplicity and charm.
This contemporary piece, inspired by these earlier Scandinavian pieces, represents a wonderful example of its type, with soft olive and sage green sqaure forms repeated across the field – the subtle variation in tone adds a great sense of depth to its otherwise stripped-back, simplified drawing. The design is framed by a wide border, with ochre colour accents – a warm, harmonious palette.
