Alan Caiger Smith studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and read history at King’s College Cambridge (1949-1952). He trained in pottery at the Central School of Art and Design in 1954
In 1955 he established the Aldermaston Pottery, a cooperative workshop of about seven potters. He used tin glazes and painted pigments on red earthenware clay, and the firing of lustres onto tin glazes in the tradition of William de Morgan.
His publications include Tin-Glaze Pottery (1973) and Lustre Pottery (1985).
He was Chairman of the British Crafts Centre (1973–1978) and was awarded the MBE in 1988.
The teapot lid has been broken and restored (almost invisible restoration)
