Object Description

Ca. 400-350 BC

A beautiful Red-Figure volute krater in the “Ornate style”, exhibiting distinctive features such as handles with frontal female heads. The krater is elaborately decorated on both sides. One side features two figured scenes spread across two registers, with lavish use of added white on both compositions. The lower depicts a seated female figure with a sceptre and shield, possibly a goddess. She is positioned in the centre and framed by an elaborate naiskos with palmette antefixes, flanked by two bejewelled women, clad in peploi and carrying a mirror and a wreath respectively. The scene on the neck features a partially nude, seated woman surrounded by lush vegetation and spiralling tendrils.

The other side of the vessel shows a very large, left-facing isolated head of a “Lady of Fashion”, flanked by elaborate palmettes, which also decorate the neck. The upper portion of the vase is decorated with a floral leaf band, painted below a large wave band that adorns the mouth of the vessel. Cf. Greek section, Civic Archaeological Museum, Milan. Inv. No. St. 135026. This Item comes with a professional historical report from Ancient Report Specialists. This item is checked against the Art Loss Register database.
