Object Description

Circa 1820, superb large sized William IV mahogany tilting dining table. The rectangular top with rounded corners and fluted edges made of finest quality Cuban mahogany with a lovely patina. It tilts on its original brass mechanism. The base stamped by famous London cabinetmaking firm Wilkinson Ludgate Hill 7587 (the number may be his patent number). Supported on a gun barrel stem over 4 fluted cabriole supports with lion’s claw feet over brass casters.

William Wilkinson (1763-1833) was the son of Joshua Wilkinson of Moorfields London who was a noted cabinetmaker. William who specialised in dining tables, obtaining patents on some styles and set up his own cabinetmaking firm in Ludgate Hill in 1808. His furniture is noted for its style and craftsmanship. His three sons later continued the family tradition as Wilkinson and Son in Old Bond Street.
