Object Description

A superb quality French 19th century (circa 1870) Kingwood freestanding occasional table with sophisticated mechanism.

This table of sophisticated form has a unique design where the top slides back and the drawer slides forward to allow full access to the interior of the drawer.

The table consists of a finely inlaid top with quarter panelled Kingwood veneered shaped central section with central inlaid brass plaque with engraved letters, possibly ‘CC’ with exquisitely inlaid brass wire to the edge.

The outer section being veneered in thuya wood with superbly inlaid Kingwood scrolling decoration with inlaid brass wire.

This leads down to an ebonised moulded edge with brass banding, below this the single drawer, sides and back veneered with Kingwood and thuya wood foliate decoration with brass wire inlay, the drawer having a decorative ormolu escutcheon plate and the interior of the drawer being mahogany lined.

The table is supported by four ormolu mounted cabriole legs, the legs also inlaid with Kingwood, thuya wood and brass wire terminating with ormolu sabots to the feet.

Although there is no evidence of a makers mark or stamp there is no doubt it has been made by a very good workshop or cabinetmaker due to the superb inlay and unique mechanism.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
