Object Description

A superb quality late 18th century (circa 1790) serpentine shaped satinwood gentleman’s dressing chest (or chest of drawers).

This fine example consists of a finely figured satinwood veneered top, serpentine shaped to the front, with central oval panel surrounded by mahogany & boxwood stringing and a cross grain Kingwood banding.

This leads out to a satinwood veneered design with the same mahogany & boxwood stringing and cross grain Kingwood banding, the outer edge having a very fine rounded Kingwood moulding.

This leads down to four serpentine shaped and graduated satinwood veneered cockbeaded drawers all with Kingwood banding and having circular pierced gilt handles (not original) and central escutcheons.

The top drawer is fitted and consists of a baize covered brushing slide which opens to reveal a finely fitted satinwood drawer of various compartments including an adjustable mirror, a secret compartment, pen tray and two compartments with removable lids and many other useful sections.

Below the drawers is a serpentine shaped apron leading down to splay feet to the front, the sides being satinwood veneered with inlaid mahogany & boxwood stringing with shaped apron below with a panelled pine back.

This chest of drawers is in very good condition for age with evidence of some old repairs, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
