Object Description

A superb quality late 19th century mahogany open armchair or desk chair in the style of Giles Grendey.

This chair consists of a superbly shaped and carved back of sophisticated design in the form of a stylised shell with harebell and foliate decoration leading down to a gadrooned plinth with foliate design below.

The wonderfully shaped and scrolling arms consist of carved decoration replicating the feathers of birds terminating with decorative eagle heads with carved and shaped arm supports, the seat finished in a reddish brown leather with brass studwork.

The chair is supported on four cabriole legs, the front two being superbly carved with acanthus decoration terminating with hairy paw feet, the back legs of cabriole design.

This chair is after a design dating to around 1730/1740 by the renowned London cabinetmaker Giles Grendey (1693-1780) and can be seen in many furniture books such as ‘English Furniture of the 18th century’ by Herbert Cescinsky Volume I pages 84/85 and Volume II pages 48/49.

There are also very similar examples of chairs by Giles Grendey in The Philadelphia Museum of Arts in USA.

This chair is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
